Flexcar

The Challenge:

Flexcar is a car-sharing service that allows members to use environmentally-friendly hybrid vehicles by the hour with none of the usual hassles of renting a car. Flexcar members go online to locate an available car, which is typically parked within a short walk, reserve it, and simply drive away. The hourly rate covers everything: insurance, gas, mileage and maintenance. A pilot program, “Flexcar For Undergrads,” would bring this new era in personal transportation to a lucky handful of college campuses nationwide, including the University of California at Berkeley. Successfully explaining the Flexcar concept to San Francisco Bay Area media would put Cal students behind the wheel and Flexcar on the road to success.

The Solution:

Access Communications first unfolded its media map with a thorough survey of transportation, higher-education and environmental reporters in the greater Bay Area.

An aggressive media outreach program in August, timed for the return of students to campus, highlighted Flexcar’s many benefits and virtues, including:

  • Unlike rental car companies, Flexcar will allow students age 21 and under access to their vehicles
  • Flexcar’s hourly rates won’t break even a student budget.
  • Flexcar is a perfect solution for moving into dorm rooms or apartments.
  • Special “Flexcar Only” parking spaces allow members to park on campus legally.
  • Road trip! Special weekend SUV packages make for affordable getaways with the gang.

The Results:

The “Flexcar For Undergrads” program resulted in feature coverage in the San Francisco Chronicle (two stories), Contra Costa Times, Daily Californian, Monterey County Herald and Oakland Tribune. KALX-FM aired a feature on the innovative new service. Bolstered by the media coverage, an on-campus booth signed up more than 6 students. Flexcars are now familiar sight on the Berkeley campus and demand for the service is growing.
